Product Description The early pioneer settlement of LaGrange Community in
Brevard County in 1858 pre-dated the missile launches
on North Merritt Island by just one hundred years. During that span of time, the northern part of Brevard County underwent significant growth and developmenthomes were built, land farmed, businesses established, and churches built. The citrus industry provided North Brevard with a productive agricultural economy that remained strong until the advent of the space age. With the federal governments purchase of the land north of the port of Canaveral in the 1950s, the Cape Canaveral Missile Test Center was established. Later, when more land was needed, the Kennedy Space Center was built on North Merritt Island. Many North Brevard towns, communities, and homesteads disappeared when the governmental acquisition of land forced residents to relocate, but it was this new era of technology that helped shift North Brevard from the farm age to the space age.

Picture Perfect Reading April 20, 2000 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This book is a must read for any resident of North Brevard County. It is a fascinating study through words and pictures. Having resided in Titusville, FL for nearly 25 years, I can appreciate the many changes which resulted in the progress we see today. This book satisfied my curiosity about the history of this unique community. Also, there are some interesting references to the founding fathers, such as Colonel Henry Titus and Britton J. Mims who was a cousin to the outlaw Jesse James. It is also noteworthy that many of the original settlers in Lagrange and Sand Point have descendants still residing in the same area as their ancestors.Overall, this book was very well written and organized. It is definitely a worthwhile investment for the history buff and curiosity seeker alike.
